Join our Virtual Youth of the Year Celebration

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier youth leadership and recognition program which brings awareness, hope, and opportunity to our nation’s most remarkable and deserving young people. The journey to being named National Youth of the Year begins locally and progresses to the state, regional, and national levels. To achieve the title of Youth of the Year, Club members must embody the values of leadership, service, academic excellence, and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact of Boys & Girls Clubs on the lives of young people.

Voice. Purpose. Passion. Sense of Place. These are just a few of the words members use to describe what they’ve gained through their experiences in the Youth of the Year program.

Join us as we hear about our Maui Youth of the Year candidates’ hopes and dreams for a bright future! One inspirational young person will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship and represent Maui in the State competition.

Eugene and Ruth Freedman

Eugene “Gene” Freedman was a great philanthropist and friend to the Boys & Girls Club movement. He was the founding chairman of Enesco Group, Inc., a global leader in the gift and collectibles markets, including the Precious Moments brand. Gene was an accomplished business leader and visionary.

Gene’s wife, Ruth, was not only a devoted wife and mother, but was considered the “First Lady” of Enesco Group. Ruth was often by Gene’s side on business trips, and served as corporate ambassador to collectors, suppliers, customers and employees.

Gene and Ruth held a special place in their hearts for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui and our youth members. The Youth of the Year program honors this extraordinary couple by celebrating our members’ accomplishments in the areas so wonderfully exemplified by the lives of Gene and Ruth: strong leadership, compassion and exceptional character.

The Freedmans raised three wonderful children, Rick, Penny and Nancy, to whom we are grateful for carrying on the family’s philanthropic legacy through their continued support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui. Their ongoing advocacy and generosity are changing and saving the lives of Maui’s youth.
